What is the Public Health Intelligence Unit (PHIU)?
Public Health is concerned with the wider determinants of health - the behavioural or environmental factors that affect people's health.
The Public Health Intelligence Unit (PHIU) in Gloucestershire is made up of a team of public health analysts who provide research and information analysis support to the Public Health directorate in Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust and the wider public health work force.
The role of the PHIU
- To provide measures on life cycle events eg birth, childbearing
- To monitor health and disease trends and highlight areas of action using public health information as evidence (see list of data sources)
- To provide health outcomes at a population level
- To evaluate progress in improving health and reducing health inequalities though health equity audits and health needs assessments
- To support local versus national comparisons using appropriate data and geographical analysis tools
- To provide information on local projects, giving examples of initiatives at a local level
- To act as a central source of intelligence providing a common basis of understanding and consistency of approach for everyone involved in public health decisions
More detailed information on the health of Gloucestershire residents is contained within the pages of this website.
